When the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute announced its 2024 spring blockbuster show would be called “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” a lot of head-scratching ensued. Its curators seek to “reawaken” these items with a dash of technology and a soupçon of sensory overload: touch, smell and sound. Imagine the ghostly rustling of silk taffeta, the clinking of giant paillettes, brought back to life by scientists and engineers. It’s not your usual fashion exhibit. Vanessa Friedman, chief fashion critic, and Jason Farago, critic at large, debated the result.

Naked dresses once again dominated the Met Gala red carpet on Monday night. AdvertisementAnother year, another sea of naked dresses at the Met Gala. John Shearer/Getty ImagesThis isn't to say some of those naked dresses haven't been standout looks — quite a few ended up on our list of the best Met Gala outfits of all time. Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty ImagesAnd unexpected might be the perfect word to describe what's been missing from so much of fashion lately, especially at the Met Gala. So, let's give the naked dresses a rest and bring some surprise back to the Met Gala.

They waltzed down the steps of Central Park’s Vanderbilt Gate on Fifth Avenue on Wednesday morning like Marilyn Monroe in her bejeweled performance of the song “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.”But here, there were many more women, each of them escorted by a waiter in a white coat, seemingly floating down the staircase and into the Conservatory Garden. And instead of diamonds, they wore hats or fascinators or headbands made of feathers, Legos and artificial flowers. One was even fashioned as a swan. The procession that entered the 42nd annual Frederick Law Olmsted Awards Luncheon at the Conservatory Garden — or the hat luncheon, as it is colloquially known — donned frocks in shades of pink, orange, lavender, ice blue and Kelly green — enough colors to rival the eggs in an Easter basket.

In February, the Met revealed Ballard’s 1962 short story “The Garden of Time” as the forthcoming red carpet theme. Victor Virgile/Gamma-Rapho/Getty ImagesThere is little glitz and glamor in Ballard’s world — or if there is, it doesn’t last for long. David Cronenberg's adaptation of JG Ballard's "Crash" debuted at Cannes Film Festival in 1996. In 2021, American designer Thom Browne’s Spring-Summer catwalk at New York Fashion Week also imagined life behind Count Axel’s garden wall. And now with the Met Gala theme, the beautiful flower that dies as soon as it’s plucked, it connects back to fashion being ephemeral.

Caroline Mullet, a ninth grader at Issaquah High School near Seattle, went to her first homecoming dance last fall, a James Bond-themed bash with blackjack tables attended by hundreds of girls dressed up in party frocks. A few weeks later, she and other female students learned that a male classmate was circulating fake nude images of girls who had attended the dance, sexually explicit pictures that he had fabricated using an artificial intelligence app designed to automatically “strip” clothed photos of real girls and women. Ms. Mullet, 15, alerted her father, Mark, a Democratic Washington State senator. Although she was not among the girls in the pictures, she asked if something could be done to help her friends, who felt “extremely uncomfortable” that male classmates had seen simulated nude images of them. Soon, Senator Mullet and a colleague in the State House proposed legislation to prohibit the sharing of A.I.-generated sexuality explicit depictions of real minors.

Roberto Cavalli, the Italian-born fashion designer who celebrated glamour and excess, sending models down the runway and actresses onto red carpets wearing leopard-print dresses, bejeweled distressed jeans, satin corsets and other unapologetically flashy clothes, has died. His company announced the death on Instagram but provided no details. Mr. Cavalli’s signature style — “molto sexy, molto animal print and molto, molto Italiano,” as the British newspaper The Independent once described it — remained essentially unchanged throughout his long career. But he skillfully reinvented his clothes for different eras, enjoying several renaissances and building a global lifestyle brand in the process. When the model Naomi Campbell wore a pair during a runway show in 1993, stretch jeans became a huge trend.

Was John Singer Sargent also the first celebrity stylist?

London CNN —In the spring of 1888, New York socialite Eleanora Iselin welcomed the portrait artist John Singer Sargent into her home, feverish over the question of what she would wear. Despite curating a selection of her best frocks, Eleanor Iselin was captured in her casual day dress at the insistence of Sargent. Working during the rise of haute couture, both Sargent and his subjects were living through a new dawn of fashion. Rachel was styled in a scrap of pink fabric which Sargent manipulated on canvas to become a dress. “Their work was ready-to-wear, using off the (rack) elements of portraiture, whereas with Sargent it always was bespoke.

San Francisco is known for its large and politically active LGBTQ population, and its myriad gay bars, including the venue for Wednesday's event, Beaux. Most at the event, as it turned out, were not APEC delegates. Stephanie Wong and Khoa Tran, founders of San Francisco tech startup reverylab.com, said they came because they were curious -- and they thought it would offer networking opportunities. Mark Anthony Catalan, a university student and a volunteer at the APEC summit, said he was sceptical.

With 66 million followers on the platform, Karol G ranks 70th in terms of follower count but 6th when it comes to engagement rates. But the label’s enthusiasm for its Karol G campaign a half-year after its release is telling, nonetheless. Karol G attends the #BoF500 Gala during Paris Fashion Week at Shangri-La Hotel Paris on September 30, 2023 in Paris, France. By the time Karol G entered the scene in a big way, fashion, luxury and sportswear giants were still warming up to her male counterparts. People aren’t as fixated on that anymore.”Indeed, it is the shift in attitudes toward language that appears to have helped Karol G secure the Loewe deal.

Editor’s Note: Featuring the good, the bad and the ugly, ‘Look of the Week’ is a regular series dedicated to unpacking the most talked about outfit of the last seven days. Her sleek white coat — from the brand’s Fall-Winter 2008 collection — was dominated by the word “No,” emblazoned across her chest in three-dimensional letters. She paired the outfit with gold platform sandals and a matching mini clutch bag from Italian label Aquazzura. In 2018, Melania Trump sparked widespread criticism when she chose to wear a khaki Zara jacket that read “I don’t really care.
